In the first lessons we started planning out our video with shot lists and storyboards, but after looking at it we decided it would not work. From then on we started looking at Spike Jonze and started the idea of disjuncture. From researching Spike Jonze we learnt that he started off filming skateboarding. Since learning this we decided to have shots linking to spike Jonze’s early work. In the next lessons we started the filming process where we Film the opening shot of Manchester sky line. Also in the lesson we filmed the skating shots to link with Spike Jonze’s work, but this was not skateboarding we films inline skating. Then in the next lessons we continued filming as we did the shots of traffic and walking through the back streets of Manchester we also did a lot of the disjuncture shots including the pigeons. We the shots that we had we started putting the video together, from doing this we noticed what sort of shots would look good in the rest of it like the texting and the computer shot so that we have got some shots that will link to the lyrics of the track. Also this is when we did the shot of me stood still while many people pass by, and when edited it looks great. In the further lessons we were in the editing process. When were nearly done with the editing we asked fellow class mates to look at our video and the feed back we got was not good the said ‘it is too bland and there is only a few shots that stand out’ and interest them. From this we improved the video and asked them again as they answered ‘the video has been much improved and is now a top music video’.

Evaluation Question 1

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our video was originally inspired by the music director Spike Jonze. Spike Jonze has been a music director for many years and is well known for his disjuncture music videos meaning although extremely good they were in total contrast to the song and often didn’t make sense. Spike Jonze first started out by filming skateboard videos and this is why we thought it would be a good idea to get some of our own skateboarding shots involved in a tribute sort of style. We did this by asking one of our members friends to skate for us in anyway and we just sat and filmed.



The original video for Warriors Dance by The prodigy also follows a disjuncture theme and the story although narrative about a cigarette packets life still does not make any sense in comparison to the video.

As Spike Jonze was our main influence it would make sense to get ideas from his past productions as this is were we got the skateboarding idea from and that worked well. I believe that with music videos that follow a disjuncture structure they all become individual in there own way due to the fact they are not being influenced by the lyrics in the song or the genre of the song, were as a song with lyrics about love could conjure up a music video very similar to another song with lyrics about love. Although disjuncture music videos don’t generally have themes does not mean to say they are not planned. At the beginning of our planning stages for our music video we thought of shots that would look good even with them being random and irrelevant, but when going out to film these locations we sometimes either found that they did not work or crossed a suitable location that would be good to film on the way. For example as we was travelling to the Manchester Wheel which has always been on our agenda to film we came across the coloured wall on the Manchester Triangle shopping centre and decided this would be an excellent filming opportunity even though it wasn’t on our list.

Here is how we made our cd cover and poster. First of all we started off by taking a picture of anothony in the coat that he wore during the video. We then put it into photoshop and used the threshold effect so that we could layer him over the background later on. We then decided to use the same font that The Prodigy use to give a more realistic look, so we downloaded it from http://www.dafont.com/ which is a free font website and also copyright free. For the background we decided to use something british as the prodigy are a british band so we used the union jack and then layerd anthony and the prodigy and song name over the top.

Props and costumes

As we only have one person in our music video there isn't a necessity to props and there is only one important costume which is a coat with a big hood.The locations of our footage for the music video was more important we felt rather then props. In a way you could say the masses of people filmed in our video were props as these were relevant to our video but another term for these would be extras.

Locations

We used a lot of locations around the Manchester area but kept them to urban street feeling. We did this by focusing on backstreets and roads. The northern quarter was a main location for us as it is very grungy and is a well known are in Manchester for derelict buildings.

Northern Quarter Another location that was used was Castlefield, we tried to used main locations in Manchester so it would be recognisable to a Manchester audience but also that people worldwide could see the sights of Manchester.

Although we didn't use Shudehill in our music video is was a very important location for us as we used the height of the building to film the skyline scene and also we using it to have an ariel view of the traffic.

We used a couple of locations in Manchester Triangle, one of them was the Manchester Wheel which is a iconic landmark in Manchester. We also used the Manchester Triangle shopping center as outside they has a colourful wall and this fit in with our music video really well.

Treatment

Our music video will have part that link with the lyrics like a shot of someone texting a line from the lyrics. One of the locations will be nightclubs to show the crowd, the use of lighting and close-up of faces and the odd feet shot to link with the beats of the music. Most of the video will have disjunction shot like landscape and use of abstract architecture. There will be the use of different camera work to give effects like rotating and turning of the camera. In the editing there will also be use of effects like speeding up and slowing down of different things.
